Jalandhar to Sultanpur Lodhi

Jalandhar to Sultanpur Lodhi is about 40 km — roughly an hour by road

Sultanpur Lodhi lies in Kapurthala district, west of Jalandhar on the bank of the Kali Bein. A car covers the run in about an hour, so a family can leave Jalandhar after breakfast, do the full round of gurdwaras, take langar and be home the same evening. Our base at Malsian in Shahkot is only about 25 km away, which is why a pickup here does not take long to arrive.

Road distance

About 40 km from Jalandhar, and about 25 km from Kapurthala. The road is straightforward and there is no highway toll on the direct route.

Driving time

About one hour from Jalandhar. Allow extra on Gurpurab and during the Kali Bein programmes, when the town fills up.

How long a full darshan day takes

Most families need five to six hours on the ground to cover the main gurdwaras without rushing, plus langar. The driver stays for all of it.

Darshan

The Sultanpur Lodhi gurdwaras — all of them in one day

Guru Nanak Dev Ji spent over fourteen years at Sultanpur Lodhi. The places connected with those years stand within a few kilometres of one another, which is why a car booked for the day works so much better here than a separate cab at every stop.

Gurdwara Ber Sahib on the bank of the Kali Bein at Sultanpur Lodhi

Gurdwara Ber Sahibਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਬੇਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ

On the bank of the Kali Bein, at the ber tree where Guru Nanak Dev Ji meditated. The main stop, and where most families begin the day.

Gurdwara Sant Ghat at Sultanpur Lodhi

Gurdwara Sant Ghatਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੰਤ ਘਾਟ

A short drive upstream along the Bein — the spot marking where Guru Ji reappeared after three days in the water.

Gurdwara Hatt Sahib at Sultanpur Lodhi

Gurdwara Hut Sahibਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੱਟ ਸਾਹਿਬ

The site of the modikhana where Guru Ji worked, remembered for the weighing that stopped at “tera”.

Gurdwara Guru Ka Bagh at Sultanpur Lodhi

Gurdwara Guru Ka Baghਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਾ ਬਾਗ਼

The garden where Guru Nanak Dev Ji stayed with his family. Quiet, and usually the easiest stop to park at.

Gurdwara Kothri Sahib at Sultanpur Lodhi

Gurdwara Kothri Sahibਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਕੋਠੜੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ

The small room where Guru Ji was held, close to the centre of the old town.

Gurdwara Bebe Nanaki Ji at Sultanpur Lodhi

Gurdwara Bebe Nanaki Jiਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਬੇਬੇ ਨਾਨਕੀ ਜੀ

The house of Bebe Nanaki Ji, Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s elder sister, whose home first brought him to Sultanpur Lodhi.

Why one car for the day works better here

The stops are spread across the town and along the Bein. If you release the cab at the first gurdwara you spend the rest of the day looking for another one, usually in the sun with elderly parents waiting. Booked for the day, the driver moves with you and your bags stay in the car.

Gurpurab and larger sangat groups

On Gurpurab and during the Kali Bein programmes the town is full and cars in this belt are committed early. Book about a week ahead. For a jatha we send a Tempo Traveller for 12 to 17, or several cars that travel together and stay together.

The ber tree and the Kali Bein

Guru Nanak Dev Ji meditated under the ber tree at this spot for fourteen years, nine months and thirteen days, and it was into the Kali Bein beside it that he disappeared, returning on the third day. The tree still stands at Ber Sahib.

Most families take a dip in the Bein and drink the water before they leave. Allow for that when you plan the day — it adds time, and it is the part nobody wants to rush.

Pind Babe Nanak Daਪਿੰਡ ਬਾਬੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾ

A heritage village built to recreate the way of life in Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s time — the houses, the trades, the fields. It is newer than the gurdwaras and easy to miss on a first visit.

If you have children with you it is usually the part of the day they remember. Tell the driver when you book and he will fit it into the route.

Why book locally

A driver who already knows the town — not one following a map for the first time

On a darshan day the difference is not the car, it is the driver. Ours run this route through the year: they know which gate to drop the family at, where parking is possible on a crowded day, where the langar hall is, and how long the round actually takes. That is the difference between a calm day and a day spent walking between stops.

November · the busiest week of the year

Gurpurab at Sultanpur Lodhi — book months ahead, not daysਗੁਰਪੁਰਬ

Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Parkash Purab is not a normal mela day here. In recent years the town has taken around a lakh people a day through the week, and up to ten lakh on the biggest day. Rooms in Sultanpur Lodhi are gone months in advance, and so are the cars in this belt.

How far ahead to book

For Gurpurab week, two to three months. Not a week. Every car in Shahkot, Nakodar and Malsian is committed long before the date, and we would rather turn you away early than let you down late.

What the day is actually like

Roads into the town are restricted and parking is pushed well out. The driver will tell you where he can realistically drop and where he will wait — and he will be on the phone, not lost in the crowd.

Coming for the day from Jalandhar

Leave very early. About 40 km normally takes an hour; through Gurpurab week allow two, and plan the return for after the evening rush out of the town.

Gurpurab falls on a different date each year, on Kartik Purnima. Confirm the year’s date before booking.

Longer yatra from Sultanpur Lodhi

Carrying on to Katra, the Devi circuit or the hills

Families who come here for darshan often keep the car for a few more days and carry on. One driver, one booking, and you decide where you stop.

Distances are approximate road distances. The exact route is confirmed with you before you travel.

Coming home from abroad

Flying in for darshan? This part is written for you

A large share of the sangat at Ber Sahib every year has flown in — from Canada, England, Italy, the Gulf. The trip usually starts at Delhi or Amritsar airport at an awkward hour, with elders and luggage, and ends at a town most drivers have never worked in.

Nothing is paid before you land

No advance — not from you, not from family here. You pay when the trip is finished. The risk of the booking is ours.

Airport to the gurdwara in one run

Delhi is about 420 km and Amritsar about 115 km. We track the flight, so a late landing costs nothing extra, and the driver takes you straight through.

If elders travel without you

Tell us when you book. The driver rings you when they are in the car and again when they reach, so you are not sitting abroad guessing.

Build note: the last card promises two phone calls. Confirm with the owner that this will be done every time before launch.

FAQ

What people ask before booking a taxi to Sultanpur Lodhi

When is Gurpurab at Sultanpur Lodhi and how early should I book?

It falls in November, on Kartik Purnima, so the date moves each year. Book two to three months ahead, not a week. In recent years the town has taken around a lakh people a day through that week and up to ten lakh on the biggest day, and every car in this belt is committed long before the date.

What is Pind Babe Nanak Da?

A heritage village built to recreate life in Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s time — the houses, the trades, the fields. It is newer than the gurdwaras and easy to miss. Tell the driver when you book and it is added to the route at no extra charge.

Can we take a dip in the Kali Bein?

Yes, most families do, and many drink the water before leaving. Allow extra time for it in the plan — it is the part nobody wants to hurry, and it is why a car booked for the day works better than a cab per stop.

Can we carry on to Katra or the Devi temples afterwards?

Yes. Katra for Maa Vaishno Devi is about 290 km, and Chintpurni, Jwala Ji and Naina Devi are usually done as a two day circuit. Keep the same car and driver rather than rebooking on the way.

What is the distance from Jalandhar to Sultanpur Lodhi?

About 40 km by road, and roughly an hour of driving. From Kapurthala it is about 25 km, and from Nakodar about 30 km. Allow extra time on Gurpurab, when the town is full.

Can I visit all the Sultanpur Lodhi gurdwaras in one day?

Yes. Gurdwara Ber Sahib, Sant Ghat, Hut Sahib, Guru Ka Bagh, Kothri Sahib and Bebe Nanaki Ji are all within the town and along the Kali Bein. Most families need five to six hours on the ground, and the driver waits between stops so you book once for the whole day.

Does the driver wait, or do I book a fresh cab at each gurdwara?

The driver waits. On a full-day booking the same car and the same driver stay with you from the first gurdwara to the last, and your bags stay in the car.

What is the taxi fare from Jalandhar to Sultanpur Lodhi?

It depends on the car, the date and how long you want the car for, so we send one fixed quote rather than a rate card. Message the plan on WhatsApp and the full fare comes back within ten minutes — and that is the amount you pay.

How far in advance should I book for Gurpurab?

About a week. Gurpurab and the Kali Bein programmes fill the town, and cars in this belt are committed early. Outside those days a booking made the previous evening is usually enough.

What is Sultanpur Lodhi famous for?

Sultanpur Lodhi is where Guru Nanak Dev Ji spent over fourteen years before setting out on his travels. He worked at the modikhana here and meditated on the bank of the Kali Bein. Gurdwara Ber Sahib, built at the ber tree on the Bein, is the best known of the gurdwaras marking those years. The town is in Kapurthala district, about 40 km from Jalandhar.

What are some places to visit in Sultanpur Lodhi?

The main ones are Gurdwara Ber Sahib on the Kali Bein, Gurdwara Sant Ghat a short way upstream, Gurdwara Hatt Sahib at the site of the modikhana, Gurdwara Guru Ka Bagh, Gurdwara Kothri Sahib and Gurdwara Bebe Nanaki Ji. All of them are within the town, which is why one car booked for the day covers the whole circuit comfortably in five to six hours.

Is there a bus or train from Jalandhar to Sultanpur Lodhi?

Yes, both run, and for one person travelling alone they are the cheaper way to come. A taxi earns its keep when you are bringing a family or elderly parents, when you want all six gurdwaras in one day without hunting for a cab between each stop, or when you are carrying bags. We would rather you knew that before booking than after.

Do I have to pay an advance?

No. The booking is confirmed on WhatsApp and you pay after the trip, in cash or by UPI. A small advance is taken only for multi-day yatra packages.

Do you have a vehicle for a large sangat group?

Yes. A Tempo Traveller seats 12 to 17, and for bigger groups we send several cars that travel together and stay together, so nobody is left behind at a stop.

Can we add Goindwal Sahib or Amritsar to the same trip?

Yes. Goindwal Sahib is about 60 km on and Sri Darbar Sahib at Amritsar about 110 km. Both can be added to a Sultanpur Lodhi day, or run as a two-day yatra with the same driver.

Do you pick up from Delhi or Amritsar airport?

Yes. We collect guests arriving from abroad and bring them straight to Sultanpur Lodhi, with the flight tracked so a late landing costs nothing extra.
